This Is Identity Theft
An imposter uses another person’s name and/or other personal information so that the consequences of his actions fall on that other person. This is identity theft.

Fraud of this kind takes different forms. It’s crazy what some people will do when they feel that they won’t be held accountable.

Financial / Credit Fraud

This is the most common type of identity theft. A thief will use someone else’s information to apply for new lines of credit. (They will need to establish a new address for this, so the cards, documentation, and bills will be sent to them, and not to the victim.) The thief will buy anything from groceries to electronics to houses, attributing the debt to you.

Deflection of Criminal Activities

A fraud may not care so much that he gets his driver’s license revoked if it’s not actually his license. He can just get a new license, with a different name on it. But what about you, not knowing that you’re in big trouble if you ever get stopped? Criminals love to have false identification on them when caught by the law.

Insurance / Medical Theft

A lot of uninsured people need medical care. Sure, some services can be had for free, but that takes lots of paperwork, and the quality of care probably won’t be so thorough. Personal information can be used to get medical ID cards. The subsequent charges for X-rays or tests or prescription medication could affect your insurance rates, and your future healthcare, should Doctors have incorrect data about your health history.

Many identity protection companies monitor only your credit. This is the most common area for identity theft, but not the only one. ID Watchdog monitors data on all areas that are vulnerable to identity theft.
